Army Welcomes 49 new Players

The newest additions to the Black Knight's football team have now become official. 49 new recruits, evenly split between offense and defense (along with a few special teams' players) were welcomed in a ceremony hosted by the teams head coach, Rich Ellerson. Most of the recruits played for the Army's prep team last year, with a handful of others recruited directly from high schools across the USA.

This recruiting class exemplifies the job that the coaching staff has done around the entire country in gathering a strong recruiting class. California, Washington, New York, Alabama, and much more are part of this class, basically every corner of the United States. The top ranked prospect is Ryan Alexander, a three-star defensive end from Texas. Alexander was named the 2009 AP 1A Defensive Player of the Year in the state of Texas, a football powerhouse. He was recruited strongly by other schools, but his height (6-1) kept a lot of D1 schools to offer him a full scholarship. Other schools such as Texas Tech offered Alexander a walk-on opportunity, though not to play DE. Thankfully, Army was able to grab him up, and everything that coach Ellerson has said about him thus far has been extremely positive.

Other notable recruits in the class include Jacob Owens, a dual threat quarterback in from Georgia who was recruited as a defensive lineman. Also, defensive tackle Jack Hanley, a 6-3, 265 pound monster from Ohio will be taking the field for the Knight's this season. He was recruited by other D1 schools such as Air Force, Kent State, and Syracuse.

The season begins on the 8th of September, when the Black Knight's travel to San Diego to play San Diego State University in Qualcomm stadium, also home to the NFL's San Diego Chargers. These new players will join the 34 that started a game for Army this past season. With Alexander creating a buzz around West Point, and the fact that two of the returning players for Army have already rushed for 1,000 yard seasons for the Knights, hopes are high for this season's team.
