Great players are one of the keys to solid, winning football teams. The 2013 Army football signing…
Billy East: Army the perfect fit
"Billy's always been a high-energy guy in practice. He's been a lot of fun to coach. I think his best football is in front of him. He can be a bigger slot receiver or a small tailback and will be an excellent fit in that Army offense. He can take the pitch, run counters, or play the wing. Coach Ellerson's a smart guy. He'll figure it out."
Coach Vogt said East rushed 106 times for 688 yards with seven touchdowns in the 2012 season. He also made 32 receptions for 409 yards and two touchdowns. East had a 10.8 yards-per-return on punts with a long of 44 and a 19.5 yards-per-return on kickoffs with a long of 29.
East said he's excited to come on board after making his pledge to Coach Guyader during an in-home visit.
"I saw Army as the perfect fit for me," said Billy East. "I'm happy to be an addition to the class and I'm looking forward to winning a few Commander-in-Chief trophies while I'm there. It made my day when Coach Guyader told me I was one of their top targets nationally.
"I feel like I was born to go to West Point because of who I am and what I represent. At first I was a little nervous and not sure about the military, but prayed about it and talked to some of my family members. It's going to be a real honor to serve my country. I think when I get there I'm going to perform up to my potential and do great things at the Academy."
At this time, East isn't sure if he'll attend Prep School or go directly into the Academy, but plans to clear that up on an official visit in January.
"I was recruited as a slot back and return man," East stated. "I have good speed and acceleration. My fastest time in the forty is a 4.4. This year I improved on my power running and holding on to the football with fewer fumbles."
East will play soccer and run track in the spring. His best time is the 100 meter dash is a 10.8. He also runs the 200 and all of the relay events on a team that qualified for state in 2011. As a senior for Buchanan Bears football, East was named All-City (Clovis) and All-County (Fresno).
