GoldenStatePreps.com takes a closer look at San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine Prep wide receiver…
Jared Vallner to Army!
"My decision wasn't solely based on the football program, but the Academy as a whole. I like the concept of it. It's a great opportunity to advance myself academically and become a leader. The concept of leadership is the foundation of what they build their football team on. I couldn't be more excited to make my commitment and become a Black Knight."
Vallner had strong interest from San Jose State and Air Force and received many preferred walk-on opportunities. It was his trip to West Point that caused Vallner to shut down his recruiting for good.
"My hosts were Julian and Jordan Crockett," Vallner stated. "They were great. What impressed me and what I was attracted to was the brotherhood I saw among the cadets. I sat down with Coach Waugh, on the visit, and went over film. I kind of understood what they want and what we're trying to accomplish as an offense.
"At first, I guess I was a little concerned about military life at the Academy. After speaking to the cadets and graduates, it cleared my head about it. I'm actually pretty excited and see it as just another opportunity in front of me.
Vallner attends a prestigious, all-male private school in San Jose named Bellarmine College Preparatory. A two-year starter on varsity, Vallner helped the Bells to the Central Coast Section Open Division championship game as a senior.
"It was awesome," Vallner said on the 2012 season. "I made some clutch catches for us like in the [Archbishop] Mitty game when I scored a touchdown in a the final minute to seal the victory for us. I was named first team All-League. I'm always looking to improve my speed. I pride myself on my 40 [yard dash] time, but I want to constantly improve on it. I usually run a low 4.4 to a high 4.3. I know that playing wide receiver isn't just about possessing speed. I've been putting in a lot of work on my route running and strengthening my upper body."
After graduation from Bellarmine College Prep, Vallner says he'll most likely be going directly into the U.S. Military Academy. He plans on spending National Signing Day with his family in Los Altos Hills.
