There are several reports and tweets that Army will hire Georgia Southern head coach Jeff Monken. If…
Army's final four candidates
Jeff Monken is the current head coach at Georgia Southern. The fiery and intense Monken has a four year record at Georgia Southern of 38-16 (704%). Monken coached as an assistant to Paul Johnson at Georgia Southern, Navy and Georgia Tech. He did a nice job as a recruiter at Navy and has service academy coaching experience.
Ed Warinner is currently the co-offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Last year Warinner's offense scored the most points in Ohio State history with 602. Warinner has coached at eight different schools: Akron, Michigan State, Army, Air Force, Kansas, Illinois, Notre Dame and Ohio State. He had great success as the offensive coordinator at Kansas and Ohio State running prolific offenses. He served as Army's offensive line coach and later offensive coordinator during a 13- year run under Jim Young and Bob Sutton. Warinner has extensive Army ties, service academy coaching experience but has never been a head coach.
Mike Sullivan is currently in his second season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator. Last year the Tampa Bay offense set franchise records for points scored, touchdowns and total yards last year. Sullivan is a West Point graduate who was once an Army assistant coach and defensive back. He has been away from the college game for over a decade. He had been an assistant coach for Tom Coughlin at the Jacksonville Jaguars and for the New York Giants. Sullivan earned two Super Bowl rings during his time coaching the Giants. Sullivan is a smart, capable offensive coach has never been a head coach.
Ben Kotwica is the current New York Jets special teams coach. The West Point graduate was a three-year starter at linebacker and captain of the winningest team in Army history. Kotwica served as a AH-64 Apache attack helicopter pilot in Iraq, Korea and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He has received the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star. Kotwica was the defensive coordinator at the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School in 2005 and 2006. He joined former Army coach Bob Sutton on the New York Jets staff in 2007. Kotwica was an intense, productive linebacker and coach. Kotwica has never coached or recruited on a college level.
The top candidates seem to be Jeff Monken and Ed Warinner right now. ArmySports.com can't confirm who will be offered the job at this time. We expect the announcement to be made on Monday.
Army's current coaching staff is still working hard on the recruiting trail and seeing surprising results despite the coaching change. The Black Knights have added three star offensive tackle Isaiah Holland (6-4, 320) from Colorado. He had offers from Colorado, Arizona State, Oregon State, San Diego State, New Mexico State, Washington State and Wyoming. Demetro Stephens (6-2, 220) from Georgia is the type of fast athletic linebacker this defense really needs. He chose Army over offers from Cincinnati, Southern Illinois, Southern and Savannah State. Cornerback Daquan Joy from Georgia chose Army over an offer from Miami of Ohio. So far the staff has added eight commitments this month to join two three star commits they secured in offensive lineman Bryce Holland and defensive end Jarvis Polu. On paper it seems to be one of the better classes they recruited. The new coach would be wise to look at some of the current staff members to help maintain current recruits in shaping their new staff.
