Army officials named head Jeff Monken coach at the United States Military Academy on Tuesday. The hiring of Monken took place after some hiccups earlier in the week when it looked like a deal might fall through. Finally, Army fans got their early Christmas present when the veteran triple option specialist was unveiled as the new commander of the Black Knights the day before the Holy holiday.

“We were fortunate to have an excellent pool of candidates to consider,” said Army athletic director Boo Corrigan. “We were very impressed with each of the individuals we interviewed. There was tremendous interest in the position nationally and we felt there were several very qualified candidates, but throughout the process Jeff separated himself from the others. His passion, energy and strong experience in turning around a program immediately helped him rise to the top of our list.”

Monken comes with excellent credentials. He's a winner and has extensive experience with the most successful service academy head coach in modern football history, Paul Johnson. Monken coached with Johnson at Georgia Southern, Navy and Georgia Tech. Johnson spoke highly of Monken.

"Jeff Monken is an outstanding football coach. He is a tireless worker who will do the right things to build a program and he will be a great leader,” said Johnson. “Jeff was a loyal assistant coach for me for many years and I'm excited for him and this opportunity."

“I am thrilled to accept the head coaching position at West Point,” said Monken. “Not only is the United States Military Academy one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world, it boasts one of the nation's richest, most historic traditions in all of college football. I am anxious to get started...meet our players, put our coaching staff in place, and begin preparations for the 2014 football season."

Monken took over struggling Georgia Southern in 2010 and re-installed the triple option. His team was immediately successful going 10-5 and advancing to the FCS semifinals. Monken went on to finish his tenure at GSU 38-16. In 2013 his team shocked the nation when it defeated perennial SEC power Florida 26-20 in Gainesville, Fla., 26-20, without attempting a single pass.

Monken, who is married and has three daughters, will be formally introduced to the Army nation on Monday at an 11 a.m. press conference.
