Coach's spotlight: Calen Taylor
"Calen's a small, little running back who has been a three-year starter for us here at Christian brothers," Pingel said. "Along with what he can do rushing the football he's also a helluva blocker and can play slot receiver. He's a very quiet kid, but a team player. I think he's going to be really good at the college level. If he was a little bit bigger I think you'd see more of the tradition powerhouse D-1 programs offering him. Army's getting a steal.
"Army first reached out to me fairly recently and said they wanted to recruit Calen. They loved how he runs the ball. He can flat out fly. They felt he would be an excellent fit in their offense. He went up with his folks [to West Point] and fell in love with the place. They were all Gung-ho about Army when they got back from the visit. They really enjoyed it up there.
"Off the field, Calen's very respectful. He's always, "yes, sir, no sir" when talking to his teachers. He's never been in any kind of trouble. Like I said, he's quiet, but at the same time, people notice him. They know who he is.
"This year we're pretty excited about our team. I'm expecting Calen to have a dynamite season. He'll get his carries and is an aggressive, punishing back, but when his number isn't called, he's a very unselfish player who doesn't mind getting out there a making a big block or two for us.
"There are still some schools waiting on his senior highlights. Syracuse is in the mix. His size may have scared some people away, but he'll make whatever team he goes to better."
Pingel said he likes to spread the ball around and that's the only reason Taylor didn't have much more than 900 rushing yards in his junior season. Taylor was named First Team All-Conference in the St. Louis Metro Catholic League in 2013.
