An early blunder by the Army offense turned into points when Army quarterback Zac Dahman coughed up a fumble which was recovered by Brian Bender for a touchdown giving Rutgers an early 7-0 lead.
Army's defense held Rutgers offense in check early with an interception on a Scarlet Knight a fourth down conversion attempt. Despite this and other opportunities, Army's offense could get very little going.
A 39-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Andre helped put the Scarlet Knights up 13-0 at the end of the first half.
The Scarlet Knights were given great field position throughout the game. Great field position helped them setup for a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tres Moses. Rutgers led Army 20-0 early in the third quarter.
The Army offense started to show some spirit in the third quarter and marched down the field but the Rutgers defense made a stand at the 3-yard line and forced a costly turnover on downs.
Finally things started to happen for Army that resulted in points. A Rutgers fumble gave Army great field position and led to a Tielor Robinson 5-yard touchdown run. Army had cut the lead to 20-7 midway through the third period.
Later in the third quarter Rutgers' Hart again found Moses in the end zone, this time from 9-yards out. The score stood at 26-7 after the Scarlet Knight's two-point conversion failed. Moses caught 4 passes on the day for a total of 40 yards.
Early in the fourth quarter, a Michael Cortese 35-yard field goal extended the Rutgers lead to 29-7.
Army would not give up. Junior quarterback Matt Silva came off the bench to lead two late Army Scoring drives. A 26-yard scoring pass to Jacob Murphy cut the lead to 29-13 after the two-point conversion failed.
Later in the final quarter Silva scrambled into the end zone from 1-yard out for another Army score. A 2-point conversion pass to Aaron Alexander pulled Army to within 8 at 29-21 with under a minute remaining.
A Cadet on-sides-kick failed and Rutgers took over the ball and control of the game. Rutgers final score came when Brian Leonard scored from 60-yards out as the Scarlet Knight attempted to run out the clock.
Army falls to 0-2 with the loss. The Black Knights host Tulane next Saturday at Michie Stadium. Rutgers improves to 2-1 and will host Navy on September 27.
