After a difficult year in 2005-2006 for the Army men’s basketball program, the prognosis for Army men’s hoops in 2007 looks happy and healthy! In non-conference tune-ups, the Black Knights have already reached double digits in wins.

While the Patriot League seems to improve every year, this may be the best chance for the Black Knights to make some waves, and dare I say, possibly achieve a post-season tournament berth.

The Black Knights have been led so far by two solid veterans, Matt Bell and Jarell Brown. Matt Bell has been a starter since his freshman year, and will likely etch his name in Army record books in several categories before his career is over. Jarell Brown has provided an offensive weapon that has not been seen at Army in a very long time. Brown's leading the squad in scoring with a 17.5 ppg average while Bell is contributing 15.6 ppg along with his solid leadership. Other key veterans that should contribute to a successful season include ultra tough Cory Sinning, athletic Kenny Brewer, solid Corbin Bates and ever-improving Doug Williams.

Perhaps the biggest reason for the Black Knights successful Nov-Dec run is the great contributions from their freshmen. Chris Walker looks to be the best big man Army has recruited in years. He's done it all so far, averaging over 8 pts a game while leading the team in rebounds, blocked shots and steals. If he continues his stellar play into the Patriot League regular season, there's no reason to believe he won't be on the Patriot League All-Rookie team, if not the All-Patriot team. Marcus Nelson looks like a poised point guard that should lead the Black Knights attack over the next 4 years. He's already leading the team in assists and improves with every game. Cleveland Richard has started 12 games and shows outstanding athletic potential!

The beginning of the Patriot League season once again proves to be tough. After Tuesday's final tune-up on the road against Dartmouth, the Black Knights keep their traveling shoes on to visit Colgate and Holy Cross for their first 2 Patriot League tilts. Then, Army welcomes perennial contender Lehigh for their first home game on Saturday afternoon, January 13th. Coach Crews has done a fine job assembling and preparing this edition of the Black Knights. Let's hope 2007 brings tidings of health, success, a little luck, a run at the Patriot League title, more fans at Christl and 2 wins over Navy!
