We weren’t much better, shooting 34%. With 4 seconds to play, Lehigh made
two free throws to take a 46-45 lead. But plebe Josh Miller took the
inbounds pass and drove the length of the court for the layup that won the game
for Army at the buzzer 47-46. First league playoff win since 1996. We now play #2
Bucknell (who routed Navy) Sunday on their court.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (24-5): Defeated Bucknell in
our final regular season game 61-57. Although Army has a
better overall record, Bucknell won the league title with a 12-2 mark to our
11-3. In beating Bucknell, Junior Cara Enright led Army with 19
points. Enright was named to the All-Patriot League First Team, and
yearling Alex McGuire made the second team. Army will begin the Patriot
League playoffs at Annapolis on Saturday. Army’s first game will be
against Lehigh at 4 pm. If we win, we will play in the semi-final game
Sunday.
LACROSSE (3-0): The second week of collegiate lacrosse play
was wild. Drexel knocked off #1 Virginia by a goal, and Albany defeated
Johns Hopkins by a similar margin. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Army
traveled to Syracuse to play #2 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome, where we had never
won. Syracuse scored first but Army led 3-2 after one quarter. Syracuse took a 4-3 halftime lead, but
Army’s defense shut down the Orangemen for the first 25 minutes of the second
half while we scored 3 goals for a 6-4 lead with 5 minutes to play. Then,
within 40 seconds, Syracuse scored twice to tie the score 6-6. I thought,
too bad, here we go! Wrong again. Senior Ryan Chase came from behind
the net to beat the Syracuse goalie with 3 minutes left, and less than a minute
later yearling Sean Reppard passed to senior Hunter Wakeland who scored to give
Army an 8-6 win. Unranked before the game, Army is now
13th. Navy (2-0) is 12th. On Tuesday, junior
Justin Bokmeyer scored 4 goals as Army won at Holy Cross 9-5. Junior goalie Adam Fullerton, who had a great game against
Syracuse with 16 saves, made 18 saves in the Holy Cross game.
MEN’S TENNIS (2-5): Beat Binghamton 4-3, but lost to Cornell 7-0 and to St. John’s 4-3.
WOMEN’S TENNIS (4-7): Tough loss to Temple 4-3 and Cornell 5-2. Defeated Fairleigh
Dickinson 6-1.
BASEBALL (2-4): Lost two of 3 at Wofford. After
losing 6-3, we split a doubleheader, losing 5-2 but salvaged the second game 4-3. Junior Cole White went 3 for 3 and pitched 3 shutout innings
of relief as Army came from behind 3-0 for the win. Army will be at UNC
Greensboro for 3 games this weekend.
TEAM HANDBALL CLUB: Finished the regular season 8-8. This
gave Army 3rd place in the league, which features the top teams in the Northeast
and Canada.
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: Will have a feature article on Army women’s
basketball coach Dave Magarity in their March 5th issue.
