Mike Viti is a bruising fullback, a throwback, he never stops coming. Jeremy Trimble is a sure-handed wide receiver and a reliable punt returner. Tony Fusco is a hard-nosed defensive tackle. Strong Safety Caleb Campbell could have a future in the NFL.
Army
football fans, meet your 2007 captains. It's a pretty good lot. One we all should be proud of.
Here's hoping this quartet helps lead Army back to prominence. For now, we take a closer look at the Black Knights' captains. All four will be seniors in the fall.
Caleb Campbell
: Sure, several Army players have gotten a shot at the NFL in past years.
But it was always a non-guaranteed opportunity. A free agent signing. No strings attached.
But Campbell could get drafted in 2008, depending how he plays this fall. He is coming off a torn ACL and MCL, sustained against
Tulane
last October. Campbell is expected to be 100 percent way before the season starts.
So, opponents, look out!
He finished with 59 tackles and is on the Lott award watch list. Expect some more hard-hitting from Campbell this fall.
Tony Fusco
: He could be one of the most under appreciated players on the Army team.
This is a guy who always brings his lunch pail to work. He's a blue-collar player and does a great job clogging up the middle. Fusco has started for three years and has a knack for blocking kicks.
He's often double-teamed, but still stops the run.
Jeremy Trimble
: A polished leader and great team spokesman. Trimble has contributed at wide receiver since his freshman year and he will be Army's main man this fall.
He caught 52 passes for 534 yards and was named an All-American punt returner. Trimble averaged 18.1 yards per punt return and was named to the Third Team All-America unit by College Football News and an honorable mention All-America by SI.com earlier this month.
Trimble, who became just the second Army player since Glenn Davis in 1944 to return two punts for touchdowns in the same season this fall, reached the end zone on a 59-yard punt return against Baylor on just his eighth career punt return.
It marked the first time since 2003, that an Army player returned a punt for a touchdown. Trimble repeated the feat against VMI three weeks later, returning a punt 76 yards for a score. That return stands as Army’s fourth longest punt return since 1982.
Mike Viti
: He plays in pain. Every game! That's because Viti is playing on two surgically repaired knees.
Not a problem.
Viti is one of the best blockers in the country, his hits are devastating, and always seems to make a big run or catch when Army needs it. He rushed for 239 yards last season and caught 13 passes.
Last year, Viti was honored with the Black Lion Award. The award is usually reserved for seniors. The Black Lion Award is presented annually to the Army player that best exemplifies the character of former Army standout Don Holleder, Viti epitomizes the toughness associated with Army’s tradition.
