Army's 2008 Football Schedule

Any day now, or maybe week, Army will release its 2008 football schedule. What's the hold up, anyway? For now, we have to speculate. ArmySports.com has a pretty good idea what the 2008 schedule will look like. So let's break down the tentative 2008 schedule, breaking it into home and away games.

AWAY

Buffalo: Is on the rise under second-year coach Turner Gill. Once an NCAA doormat, Buffalo finished 5-7, 5-3 Mid-American Conference this year.

Rice: Went a disappointing 3-8 this season. This is definitely a winnable game for Army. Too bad, it's on the road.

Rutgers: Good news: Ray Rice, who ran all over Army this season, is entering the NFL draft. Still, it's not like Rutgers will be a pushover. The Scarlet Knights went 8-5 this year, throttling Ball State 52-30 in the International Bowl.

Navy (in Philadelphia): This is starting to get old. The Midshipmen have beaten Army six years in a row, including a 38-3 victory in Baltimore last month. None of the games have been close. That's unacceptable. Navy went to another bowl game, the Poinsettia, losing to Utah, while Army sat home again.

Texas A&M: Didn't Army play Texas A&M on the road two years ago. Oh yeah, that was a home game, in San Antonio, if that makes sense. Texas A&M has this game listed on Sept. 27. The Aggies, who went 7-6 this year, just hired Mike Sherman.

HOME

Akron: Army could have beat Akron last year if it had a quarterback, but wasn't that the story of the year? Akron went 4-8 this year and can be had at Michie Stadium.

Eastern Michigan: Another 4-8 MAC team, another win for Army? If they are for real, Army has to beat this team.

Temple: Army played its best game of the season, beating Temple 37-21 on Sept. 29. Temple is vastly improving under coach Al Golden, who was considered for the UCLA job. This could be the Black Knights' toughest MAC opponent of all. Temple went 4-8 last year, after starting the season 0-5.

Louisiana Tech: Went 5-7 last year, losing to Hawaii by one point in overtime (45-44) and to New Mexico State (22-21). This WAC team could give Army fits on defense.

Air Force: Troy Calhoun could easily become the next dean of service academy football, following Paul Johnson and Fisher DeBerry. Some people had Air Force for three wins this year. Calhoun led Air Force to a 9-4 mark. The Falcons lost to Cal 42-36 in the Armed Forces Bowl.

New Hampshire: A Division I-AA power who could easily beat Army in the Michie Stadium-opener. New Hampshire went 7-5 last year, a down season for the Wildcats.
