Army Preview 2008: Defensive Line

As part of ArmySports.com's continuing preview of the 2008 Army football season today we'll take a look at the defensive line. The Black Knights open their 2008 season on August 29th when they host the Temple Owls at Michie Stadium.

Overiew: Gone are stalwarts Brandon Thompson and John Wright but Black Knight fans can rest well knowing that Ted Bentler and Victor Ugenyi return to co-anchor the line.

Starters lost:

DE Brandon Thompson
DT John Wright

Returning starters:

DT Ted Bentler (6-2, 280, Jr.)- Transfer from Iowa who worked his way into the starting lineup last season. Finished the '08 campaign with 42 tackles and 3 sacks.
DE Victor Ugenyi (6-3, 253, Jr.)- Started all 12 games and had 33 tackles including 7.5 tackles for loss.

Others to watch:

Defensive End

Fritz Bentler (6-3, 235, Jr.)- Saw action in two games. Younger brother of Ted Bentler.
Ryan Crider (6-4, 239, So.)- Rising sophomore.
Nicholas Emmons (6-4, 250, Jr.)- Saw action in all 12 games. Had 21 tackles including 4 for loss (1 sack). Won a starting position in the spring.
Nathan Held (6-2, 274, So.)- Rising sophomore.
Marcus Hilton (6-0, 252, So.)- Rising sophomore. Attended USMAPS.
Carson Homme (6-4, 252, So.)- Long snapper who hopes to also see action at end. Attended USMAPS.
Aaron Irby (6-1, 254, Jr.)- Hard working junior who hopes to see some playing time. Attended USMAPS.
Grant Johnson (6-1, 242, Jr.)- Undersized junior played his prep ball at national power Southlake- Carroll in Texas.
Andrew McDonald (6-2, 230, So.)- Developing sophomore.
David Shore (6-5, 253, Sr.)- Veteran who will back up Emmons at one end spot.
Phillip Smith (6-4, 269, Jr.)- Good sized junior who could see reserve action.

Defensive Tackle

Hunter Byles (6-1, 280, Jr.)- Hard working junior who hopes to see playing time. Attended USMAPS.
Devin Cox (6-2, 266, So.)- Rising sophomore.
Taylor Dawson (6-2, 254, Jr.)- Determined junior who has worked hard to improve.
Mark Faldowski (6-3, 262, Sr.)- Listed as the backup to Gann after spring drills.
Mike Gann (6-2, 270, Jr.)- Saw action in twelve games last season. Won a starting position in the spring. Has 24 career takles. Father, Mike, played for Notre Dame and later with the Atlanta Falcons.
Tim Jennings (6-3, 267, Sr.)- Hopes to see action during his final season at the academy.
David Kava (5-10, 224, Sr.)- Saw limited action the last two seasons, mostly on special teams. Worked his way into a backup role at one of the tackle positions.
Joe Paolini (6-0, 264, Sr.)- Senior who hopes to see action in '08. Attended USMAPS.
Edwin Pitts (6-1 261, So.)- Rising sophomore.
Seth Reed (6-1, 261, So.)- Rising sophopmore. Attended USMAPS.
Bryan Rodriguez (5-11 285, So.)- Rising sophomore.
Jake Walsh (6-3, 280, Sr.)- Hard working senior.
Greg Spencer (6-0, 260, Jr.)- Junior who hopes to draw action in 2008.
