Army gets big win at Eastern Michigan in the opening game. Head coach
Rich Ellerson
and plebe starting quarterback
Trent Steelman
notch victories in their debuts.
OFFENSIVE STAR OF THE GAME
SB No. 27
Kingsley Ehie
Rarely mentioned in the preseason by Army media, Ehie's name rang loud across the nation after rushing for 75 yards and two touchdowns to help the Black Knights down the Eagles. Kingsley had 12 carries for 75 yards. He had some nice runs including 17, 9, and 10 yard carries.
DEFENSIVE STAR OF THE GAME
DE No. 44
Joshua McNary
McNary was counted on before the season to be one of Army's defensive stalwarts. He more than delivered on Saturday. He and
Victor Ugenyi
thrived under Ellerson's new swarm defense. McNary finished with 9 tackles and 2 and 1/2 sacks. Early on in the game, after the Cadets had taken a 6-0 lead, McNary made his presence known when he pressured EMU quarterback
Andy Schmitt
and forced him to throw a bad pass that was intercepted by
Donovan Travis
. In all McNary was in on four different sacks of Schmitt.
UNSUNG HEROES OF THE GAME
P No. 18
Jonathan Bulls
As the new punter, Bulls was one of the question marks for Army before the game. He turned out to be one heck of a punter. He had seven punts for a 41-yard average and one went for 48 yards. In the second quarter one of his punts was downed at the EMU 7-yard-line. It only took the Eagles one play to fumble and the Black Knights went on to capitalize by scoring their second touchdown of the day.
DB No. 14 Joshua Jackson
There has been much said about the Trent Steelman and his debut with Army as the quarterback. However, another freshman who played big part in Saturday's victory was defensive back Joshua Jackson. Late in the fourth quarter after EMU had cut the Army lead to 13 and still had time to pull out a win, Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it to the EMU 13 and was essentially the final nail in for the Eagles' coffin.
